Overview

A committed Internet user, both professional and recreational. She is a member of the International Internet Society ISOC (representing her company membership) and a Director and Chair of the Australian Chapter (Internet Australia), and believes that the communication and business opportunities that the Internet offers for cost-effective global use, and recognition of it as both a public asset and an openly accessible resource needs the application of cautious and continuous care and diligence.

Career Profile

About me:- Forty(ish) years ago I left my Post-Grad research and career as a tutor in Physiology (continuing as a Teaching Associate at the Asia Pacific Research Institute of Macquarie University during the early 2000 years) to operate our family-owned microenterprise, Hovtek Pty. Limited, until June 2018.

Our clients in Australia were Micro Businesses and SMEs – and internationally mainly SMEs, Government (including Local Gov), Aid Funded bodies, NGO’s, Not For Profits and Educational Offices and allied instrumentalities.

I also managed (and continue to do so) our portfolio of Patents and IP, as well as a small portfolio of domain names in .au as well as in the global DNS, but most importantly,

I am an avid end-user of the Internet for work and recreation and firmly believe and advocate that the Internet should be seen as a public asset and needs to be developed and maintained as a cost-effective and accessible resource for communication, education, community, social and business opportunities by the Australian and Global community.

In 2003, we started a spin-off project called BuildersNet, which was developed from some of the TQM (ISO-9002) activities of Hovtek; this went from an online application to become a stand-alone Australian Company that relied totally on the Internet to facilitate its operation and day-to-day business… Hovtek Pty.Ltd closed as an Australian Company in June 2018, and the limited DNS reselling services for clients were then supported by Cheryl Langdon-Orr operating as a sole trader using ‘Hovtek’ as a Registered Business Name.

Nowdays as a ‘mostly’ retired PWD, I focus my volunteer time on opportunities in coaching and mentoring the next generation of Leaders in the Internet, Internet Governance and ICT space; Some continued Policy work in the Internet and Domain Name arena as well as volunteering to serve on the Internet Australia Board (a Chapter of global ISOC see https://www.internet.org.au ) in the current role of Board Chair, and being an active member of the organising Committees for the Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrIGF) see https://www.aprigf.asia and the Australian Internet Governance Forum (auIGF) see https://www.auigf.au

Women in DNS – Cheryl is proud to be a Founding Member and continued supporter of DNS Women; DNS WOMEN started in 2009 as a small group of five women inside ICANN willing to encourage other women to be more active and participative in ICANN,.. We have over 400 influential women from all over the globe as members. We are a diverse community – whether in the type of job, subject matter, global location, public or private sectors representation, age, or education – that facilitates industry-wide collaboration to drive positive growth in the DNS industry.
Response to our 2015 member survey indicates that approximately 86% of our members are in executive or management positions. Of those who responded, about 30% have a business background (vast spectrum), followed by 20% technical and 20% law/policy; the majority consists of salaried, full-time employees.
